Another Year, But a Different Attitude!

Thought about this long and hard before I set my goal of weight loss being my primary past time in 2008.  I am a physician so I can quote ad nauseum all the reasons related to health and know them intellectually, but wasn’t truly feeling them.  I was able to block them from my heart for some reason, and now, I embrace them and accept that I’m not happy, truly happy or healthy at this weight and I need to take weight loss as seriously for me as I do for my patients.  That means putting a plan together, ie this blog and website, telling others that I am on this journey and being honest about its progress both trials and triumps.  I continue to record my food intake, water consumption and my exercise expenditures.  I have a great pedometer that I put on every day in hopes of getting to 10,000 steps daily until the gym opens in Fernley on 2/01/08.  Then I’ll start each day with an hour in the gym and then head to my office to get ready for my workday.  I’m best if I workout early in the morning, otherwise I have every reason in the world, not to do it.  I also am usually too tired in the evening and if I get inside my house — it would take an atomic bomb to get me out walking or doing an exercise tape.  So I’ll stick with the early AM because I know with that I can be successful.

Also just got done setting goals for 2008 with my hubby.  I think it is smart to do that and review them every quarter.  It helps to keep me on track and remind me why I’m doing what I’m doing.  So we set a saving goal for our futures, set weight goals for our health and then goal for getting things done around this house and in the landscaping.  They may be a bit lofty, but I like to aim high and push myself.

Had friends over last night for dinner and conversation.  Pretty low key but fun and comfy.  Glad we did it and now my house is clean for the week.  Guess I’ll head off to open and unpack two boxes in the master bedroom.  Turns out I’ve just been recruited to put up pigeon deterents so I’m off to help.  Hope all are well and looking forward to a new and exciting year of changes!

I absolutely loved your blog and profile, and what struck me the most is the fact that unlike so many of us, you not only know yourself and your limitations, but you find ways to work around them.

Working out in the wee hours of the morning for example, because you know once you’re home NOTHING is getting you out of the house–that’s not only empowering, but will be the difference between success and failure on this journey!!

I look forward to sharing our progress on this journey…I have to lose about 83.8 lbs by December 31st, 2008!!

Thanks Marathongirl. I just figured out how to respond to your comments on this site. I agree, knowing your roadblocks and brainstorming them is really important if you truly want to be successful. Gotta walk the walk as well as talk the talk. So I’m moving on and doing my best each day and looking at it simply in that manner. Did I do my best, and if not what could I change to do better? That is easier with the food journal. So come along for the journey and the success will be many and hopefully the failures few and getting to be even less. Well, I’m off to cook dinner for me and the hubby and make sure we are all prepared for snowmobiling tomorrow. Thanks again for your post! All the best!

I think it is too cool that a physician like yourself is acknowledging that weight loss is so tough!! My doctor is always like, “Lose weight. Don’t eat so much.” I want to scream, “Got any ideas on how to do that, Captain Obvious!” I am do happy that there IS a doctor out there that can sympathize with her patients. And, when you DO lose the weight, you are able to sympathize with people who are trying. That is AWESOME!
I never thought about reviewing my goals quarterly. That is a great idea. Will start doing it. Thanks for the tip!
Got any tips for people trying to quit smoking? Like, some over the counter methods that may work well?

Good Morning Donnasblog — For my patients there really hasn’t been an over the counter method that has worked that great. BUT, There is a new medication called Chantix that you take twice a day WITH FOOD, and it really works. I always suggest staying with it for 6 months and then most people are really DONE WITH CIGS! Wouldn’t that be great. It costs about $100/mo if your insurance doesn’t cover it and must be prescribed by your MD. Most people spend at least that on cigs if they are smoking 1 pack per day and much more than that of course, if smoking more. So call you MD and get your butt in there and get it done. Also it has a side effect of nausea so people do not gain weight while quitting. Can give some vivid dreams and cannot be mixed with alcohol, which if you are trying to lose weight should only be a rare event anyway. So Miss Donna, good luck, hope that helps. I’m off to snowmobile today!
